3D Cube Drawing Guide for Beginners

In this art tutorial you lot'll larn how to describe a 3D cube (freehand) using two signal perspective concepts. I won't exist instruction y'all technical techniques using a ruler. Instead I want to show y'all how to describe a 3D box without using a ruler and vanishing points. The skills you lot will learn hither would be all-time utilized for sketching, cartoon cartoons, or comic style fine art.

If you lot want a more technical drawing lesson, go to The Basics of Ane Signal Perspective.

You'll larn some bones concepts when it comes to drawing 3 dimensional cubes. There are some common mistakes people make that are easily corrected. All you lot need is some bones knowledge to be able to identify and set these mistakes.

With the techniques yous will be learning in this drawing tutorial, you'll be able to draw only virtually anything that takes on the bones shape of a cube. I didn't realize how many objects there are that are cubes until I starting putting this lesson together. They are everywhere!

Cube Cartoon Vocabulary

Shape – a two-dimensional chemical element created from line, and tin be positive or negative.

Form – is created when depth is added to a 2-dimensional shape making it three-dimensional.

Parallel Lines – 2 lines that are ever the aforementioned distance apart but never bear on.

Calorie-free Source – the management in which the source of calorie-free is coming from. The light source tells you where all of your lite values and shadows.

Shading – used in drawing to show a range of lighter to darker values. This helps to create the illusion of depth.

Value – Lightness or darkness of colors and tones that range from white to black.

Shadow – a dark area where the lite from a light source is blocked by a solid object. This shadow is what we typically see no the object itself.

Cast Shadow – a shadow that is create past an object blocking low-cal that is cast on the ground or some other surface.

Shape Vs. Class

So technically, a cube is a course not a shape. And past definition, is iii-dimensional. Both shape and grade are one of The 7 Elements of Fine art. The difference between shape and course is that a shape is two-dimensional, and a class is iii-dimensional.

And since drawing annihilation in 3D is way cooler looking than with second, most of our lessons focus on drawing objects in 3D.

Since nosotros take the technical stuff out of the way, permit's get started.

Don't Describe Cubes Like This

I'd like to outset by saying this… If you lot are currently drawing your 3D cubes using the overlapping square method. Please stop! Information technology drives me nuts when I see this.

It'south nothing brusque of a parlor trick and doesn't teach you anything. Furthermore, information technology'south almost impossible to utilize this method to whatever everyday object. My goal is to teach you the needed skills for you to be able to look at whatsoever (cube shaped) object and draw it.

Allow'due south get started on something a bit more applied to employ in your drawings.

How to Draw a Cube – Footstep by Pace

I settled on this method after struggling to go my students to understand the concepts involved in drawing 3D shapes. Even the older ones struggled to draw a 3D cube correctly. After trying several different techniques, this is what I came upwards with that made the virtually sense to them.

Footstep one – Start by Drawing the Corner Nearest to You

There are a couple of ways to begin drawing your cube. How you commencement will depend on the angle you lot will exist viewing your object. If y'all are looking at your object from a directly on view, yous would use a one-point perspective concept. I won't exist showing you that here though.

I discover the ¾ view to be the most interesting almost of the time. For the purpose of this tutorial, I'll be focusing on the ¾ view. This will crave you to follow the 2-betoken perspective concepts.

Begin by cartoon the corner of the cube that is nearest to you. It should await something similar this.

Step ii – Draw the Lesser Edges

For the bottom edges of the cube, draw two lines forming a slight "Five" shape. The length of these lines volition decide the overall shape of your cube. If you want your final drawing to look like an even cube, keep these lines roughly the aforementioned length.

Step three – Draw the Height Edges

Side by side, draw the lines for the upper edge of your cube that are closet to you lot. These should also class a slight "Five" shape. It's very of import that these lines are parallel to the respective lines on the lesser of the cube. The meridian and bottom lines to the left of your corner must be parallel to each other. As well as the top and bottom lines to the right of your corner being parallel to each other.

Step 4 – Draw the Sides

At present you want to connect these lines with ii vertical lines. Both of these lines need to be parallel with your initial corner line. If these 3 lines are not parallel with each other, your cube will start looking funky.

Footstep five – Draw the Edges Furthest from You

Add together in the border of the cube that is furthest abroad from you. Once again, proceed these lines parallel with their counterparts beyond from them. If you await at the image beneath, you want to keep the shorter lines parallel with each other. As well as the longer lines parallel with each other.

Step 6 –  Adding Depth to a 3D Box

The last affair y'all need to do is add together in the far corner to the inside of your cube. This line should also exist parallel with the other three vertical lines.

Here is what my completed cube looks similar.

You lot can also have this a footstep farther and add some thickness to your cube by adding some additional lines to your cartoon. Once again, just go on your lines parallel.

How to Shade a Cube

An important office of drawing, is learning how to shade. Offset, depict your 3D box or cube and decide on your light source. For this instance, our low-cal source is going to be coming from the upper left.

This volition create the darkest shadow on the opposite side of the cube. The source of lite volition be completely blocked on the far side of the cube.

I find it easier to beginning with the darkest surface area first.

We're going to piece of work from darkest to lightest, so our centre value volition be next. This light source on this side of the cube will exist partially blocked.

Take a wait at Creating a Value Calibration if you need assist achieving different values.

The exact location of the light source will determine where the lite reflects off the surface of your cube. For the purpose of learning how to shade a cube, y'all can just cull a spot on this side to leave a light spot.

The lightest side volition be the acme of the box considering there isn't anything blocking the light. Information technology looks better if y'all add a low-cal shadow nearest the low-cal, and then fade that into white. You lot can leave it completely white if yous want also.

The final step is to add a cast shadow on the far side of your 3D cube drawing. This should be as dark, or darker than the side of your cube.

When learning how to draw a cube, shading is almost equally important every bit the actual drawing. Don't experience like everything you practice has to be perfect though. Acquire and sympathise the basic concepts, and amend over time with do.

How to Describe a 3D Box from Real Life

As I was walking around work today I was looking for something interesting to draw that had a basic shape of a cube. There were so many options to choose from.

I settled on this crate that I came across. I idea it would exist fun to depict, so here we get. Equally mentioned in my earlier mail, Anyone Tin Acquire to Draw,  the outset affair you accept to exercise is learn to "See". Y'all should begin by taking note of the angle at the lesser of the crate as you offset to layout your sketch.

From-a-Crate-to-a-3D-Cube

This was my initial sketch that I did. However, afterwards looking at information technology, I realized one of the boards wasn't quite right. The angle of the heart board on the summit is off just slightly, which makes a pretty big difference. If you wanted your boards to wait uneven, and then this would work merely fine.

I re-drew the top lath so it was parallel with the boards next to it. This was my final sketch. The board I fixed is fatigued with a regular pencil. I too cleaned upwardly the bottom boards every bit well.

I'll get out you with this challenge. How many unlike objects can you draw from a cube? I would love to see what you come up up with. Please cease back and share your results.

Here is my do page. I walked around the house and quickly sketched anything that was cube shaped. The more y'all practice, the meliorate you will be able to "Meet" what you are drawing. This is a quick exercise that y'all would benefit from doing often.
